McKay building began in 1952 after an evaluation by the Brigham Young University College of Education concluded that the existing building for the College of Education were no longer meeting the growing needs of the program. Lester Benjamin Whetten (1904-1988), PhD, was the dean of the General College at Brigham Young University. He also served as president of the Mexico Mission. Lester Benjamin Whetten was born 23 June 1904 in Colonia Garcia, Chihuahua, Mexico. He graduated high school from the Juarez Stake Academy in 1926.
